BIOGRAPHY
Maylyn Murphy’s sultry and bluesy torch-singer style makes her one of today’s great jazz-pop vocalists and pianists, with an innate sensuality reminiscent of Norah Jones and Diana Krall. But the richness of Maylyn’s voice and interpretation harkens back to a culturally diverse childhood.
Before Maylyn was 10 years old, she lived all over the world, learning Tagalog in the Phillipines, Japanese in Yokohama, and English in a small town in California. She learned at a young age that her unique voice could reach out to those around her, but it wasn’t quite enough to sing superbly in 3 different languages. So Maylyn taught herself to play the piano, and at age 14 began winning singing competitions in Japan where she attended high school. Although her family stayed in Japan, Maylyn felt she needed to go to the United States to pursue her aspiration to be a professional musician. America was home to her most beloved musical influences - Sade, Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae, and Stevie Wonder. Maylyn’s family supported her passion and obvious talent, and encouraged her to follow her dream.
When she was 18, Maylyn seized upon an incredible opportunity to live in the U.S. - she was accepted to one of the best music schools in the world. Maylyn received her Bachelors of Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston. There she expanded her classical talents, but she also worked with local musicians and performed with some of the biggest names in the industry, like Patti LaBelle, Usher, Lil’ Kim, Kim Burrell, and P.Diddy. After graduation, she continued to pursue her career as a jazz singer and pianist, and took part-time jobs singing with local bands, modeling part-time for MTM agency, and hosting a local television show called International Rhythms.
In My Life is Maylyn’s first full-length album, produced by renowned jazz musician and composer, Miles Donahue.
