BIOGRAPHY
Bio: Tim McDonald
I began Classical studies on the piano at the age of seven years old. At the age of nine, I entered into the Classical Guild Society and studied with various classical teachers until my junior year of high school. During this time, I performed steadily in Jerry Falwell’s youth band for the Sunday Night Live program at Thomas Roads Baptist Church.
In 1993, I began attending Billy Graham’s school, Montreat Anderson College, on a soccer scholarship. While there, I took business and music theory classes. I co-started a band which performed for several activities at the college, and even won a battle of the bands at Brevard Music College in which we featured our original music. I performed solo music as well. I played for the Dean’s Christmas party, and also received a Music Performers and Leadership Scholarship. Also, while in college, I concentrated on teaching myself to perform various styles of music including: Jazz, R&B, Blues, Rock, Funk, and Alternative.
I left college to enter the Army and auditioned on piano to join the Army band. I attended the Armed Forces School of Music and graduated with honors
After the School of Music, I was assigned to the 77th Army Band based out of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. While there, I was asked to join two local bands. One featured Dennis Binem, who performed and wrote for Ike and Tina turner. The other was with Phil Sampson who wrote “I Loved Them Everyone”. This song went to number one on the Country charts and is still being played on the airwaves. I performed in these bands for four years while stationed at Fort Sill. During this time, I also performed with Dave Mancini of “The Tonight Show” band, as well as with Byron Berline, with whom I later recorded several radio shows which featured Bluegrass music.
A few months later, I met Dave Alexander who, at that time, was the director of the One and Two O’clock lab bands at the University of North Texas. I performed several times with Mr. Alexander (son of Trombone great, Ashley Alexander), and he helped me further mature my talents. While there, I also met Dan Haerle, Piano Professor at North Texas State University and author of many Jazz theory books, as well. I studied Jazz with Mr. Haerle for two years. He showed me how to best reflect myself in my music.
I also met with another Jazz legend, Frank Mantooth. In 1999, Mr. Mantooth asked me to help student teach at the Blue Note Records Jazz Clinic at Skidmore College, in Saratoga Springs, New York. There I helped students further their musical skills, and also studied with greats: Todd Coolman (sideman and bassist for Horace Silver), Curtis Fuller (sideman with John Coltrane), Ed Shaugnessy (drummer for the “Tonight Show” band with Doc Severenson), as well as many others. I regret to inform everyone of the loss of jazz legend Frank Mantooth. Frank passed away on Jan. 30, 2004.
Later in 1999, I was reassigned to Germany, where I stayed for two years. While there, I performed with Al Jacobson (sideman for Dave liebman) and performed for the Music Conservatorium of Mainz. I also performed concerts with Gootz Ohmert (bassist for Leroy Jones), and toured Europe with Byron Berline (Bluegrass great who discovered and performed with Vince Gill).
In 2001, the Army shipped me to the Armed Forces School of Music, where I now teach Piano and Midi for military musicians. While at the School of Music, I have had the honor of being the featured artist with the 77th Army Band at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for their 2002 Christmas concert.
While stationed here, I have opened for Earl Scruggs, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, and Vince Gill with Byron Berline, and was a member of the band who opened for Chris Cagle in Witchita Falls and featured Katrina Elam. I have opened, with my trio, for the Turtle Island String Quartet and many other world-class Jazz musicians as well.
I perform many functions in the Virginia area, New York Broadway Productions as well as with the Virginia Symphony with whom I performed during a September 11th memorial service at Christopher Newport University, and in “For the Love Of the Silver Screen” at Chrysler Hall in November 2003. I will perform with the symphony on March 5th and 6th 2004.
I was also featured artist in residence for Cameron University’s 2004 Jazz Festival. I have performed with many bands and artists in Virginia including: Jae Sinnett, Douglas Miller, the Russell Scarborough Trio, Dave Adams, Harry James Big Band, and many others. I have just completed a self titled album, an album with the Russell Scarborough Trio, as well as an album with Douglas Miller (second tenor and road manager for the Count Basie Band). I sing lead and backup vocals at many gigs, play bass and trumpet, and own Tim McDonald Publishing. Tim is currently on tour with Country legend Mark Chesnutt.
